Frontlines of Microbiological Research : Concepts and Applications In commemoration of the 90th birthday celebration of Dr. Tarasankar GhoshWe are pleased to welcome you to the Indian Mycological Society Symposium (IMSS 2012) on Frontlines of Microbiological Research : Concepts and Applications to be held at Kolkata on 02-04 February, 2012. Background InformationMicrobes, the first life on earth, the root of the tree of life have the greatest genetic and metabolic diversity. They represent about two third of the total number of living organisms of the planet earth and played a pivotal role in the creation, maintenance and restoration of all ecosystems of the world. Many microbes are extremophiles and thrive in extreme environmental conditions with their amazingly diverse extremozymes. In the post-genomic era application of genome based approaches has recently been used to understand many facets of fundamental microbiology. Except a few disease-producing organisms most microbes play beneficial role to environment, industrial economy, crop yield, human and animal health care programmes involving life saving drugs and vaccines. To accommodate the wide diversity of microbial life and the interests and expertise of microbiologists, we have chosen a broad theme for the IMSS 2012. The National Symposium will cover a broad range of topics including microbial diversity, functions, and/or interactions with special emphasis on infection biology and biotechnological exploitation of the microbial resources. The main themes of the Symposium will be highlighted in the keynote address and plenary lectures by eminent scientists of the country. Additional oral presentations will be arranged in parallel sessions from amongst the selected abstracts submitted. Themes for Discussion
