Microbial Diversity and Plant Health: 8th National SymposiumWelcome to the information section for the 8th National Symposium on Microbial Diversity and Plant Health, due to be held on November 29-30, 2007 at the Department of Plant Pathology, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya, Mohanpour, Nadia - 741252 (West Bengal). Background InformationDuring the last decade, food production in India is on the decline and food, nutrition and environmental security in this country is at stake. One of the major causes of this decline is the resurgence of pests and diseases. More than 30% of annual crop loss is due to obnoxious microbes. Management of these pests has become of paramount importance to achieve food security. Rapid progress in biotechnology, recently indicate the immense potential of the microbes for pests and disease management, production of vaccine, drugs, forest management and several industrial processes particularly food processing, dairy, mining etc. Microbes in India is still little understood. Their immense diversity and potential needs to be scientifically assessed for the improvement of crop, forest, soil, environment, human and livestock health. A fresh look into this diversity is also necessary under the influence of recent global climatic changes. This National Symposium is being convened to share our knowledge of Microbial Diversity, and to study it's potential use in plant, animal, human and environmental health. Themes for Discussion
